News & Publications

Individuals who did not qualify for, or did not receive, the full amount of the third Economic Impact Payment may be eligible to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit based on their 2021 tax year information. Individuals may have received their third Economic Impact Payment through initial and "plus-up" payments in 2021.

Taxpayers with specified foreign financial assets that exceed $50,000 on the last day of the tax year or $75,000 at any time during the tax year (MFJ more than $100,000, .) must report those assets to the IRS on Form 8938,

If you are a U.S. person and holds an account or signature authority over an account located outside of the United States; and the total value of all foreign financial accounts exceeded $10,000 at any time during the calendar year reported, you must report your accounts on FBAR by June 30.

Buying or leasing a car

With both purchased and leased cars, you can choose to deduct either the standard mileage rate , parking fees and tolls or the actual expenses .

For the purchased car, you can deduct the business percentage of your interest expense on the loan. And, you can deduct its cost over 5 years (aka depreciation) . However, if the car worth more than $16,000 it consider “luxury” car and there is a limit on the annual amount you can deduct.

(Due to these limits, it could take 12 years to depreciate all of the cost of the car).

If you lease a car, the car is not yours; you can deduct the business percentage of your lease payments. There is also a limit on the amount you can deduct each car, but it’s minimal compare to the purchase car option. ( “lease inclusion amount” )

As the price goes up on the car, leasing usually becomes more preferable.

I gave this business a great review when I started working with Miki. However I have since fired her as my accountant. It is clear she has no idea how to deal with remotely complex bookkeeping. After wasting months of our time and getting nowhere we have engaged a competent CPA to assist who has completed in 3 weeks what Miki could not in 2 months. Miki understood the scope of the work and should have advised us she was unable to inderstand and deal with it instead of blindly fumbling around for months. Has cost us a significant amount of money.

The reason I am writing is that I want to help others to avoid mistake I did in dealing with this tax preparer. The only time I used Rosnthal service was my ta return 2015. I was self-employed and carried form 1095-misc with me. That time I knew nothing about taxes and completely relied on "professional" (very bad decision). But, hey, that is why you use a service! For the most part you trust a person who you believe has the right knowlege and can help you with taxes. I asked her some questions, some of them out of curiosity, however her respond was always:" do not worry, I made it good for you". Well, ok, good is good. Overall on the federal level I got a refund (premium tax credit) but on state level I owed, so my gain was $500. At that time I thought at least I do not owe taxes, and everything that I owed to state I paid out of my return on federal level. Although I left home with a strange feeling considering my situation: filing status, dependent and income. I was having a feeling that I am eligible for better refund and no payments at all. Well, what did I know about real thing-taxes?! Nothing. So I just left. Recently I got a lovely letter from IRS stating that I owe them SELF-EMPLOYED taxes in the amount that was exceeding any possible numbers plus the interest that accrued from the date after filing deadline up until this September. I would say I never owed that much to IRS( again taking into consideration my situation). Of cause first thing I did I called her and respond was:" The reason you got this letter is that you owe self-employed taxes-just pay it". What????!Just pay it???! How about you explain me at first place that I owe more taxes on self-emloyment?! Well the good thing by now I got more into taxes and have an idea of what is taxed and how(thank you self-education!) So I took my return out and was shocked seing that my income from 1095 misc was reported as #7. Wages, salaris and so on on form 1040. Now I understand why I had self-employment taxes unpaid... When I asked her about interest she said that it is my obligation to pay since I did not filed taxes quaterly for that year. Really?? I thought you choose to do so, whichever is more convinient to you. Since my income was not big, I was fine with paying taxes once a year. Plus on the back of the IRS papers they specifically told from what dates interest accrued and for what. So the thinks I am an idiot who cannot read and she can tell me anything -I'll eat it. BE AWARE of this not only with her but double check and do your research if you not sure in something. After that conversation she never responded to me back. And it is obvious why. At least she signed my papers. I end up using other company for a second opinion and they were shocked from what they see she did. First of all I was not eligible for Premium tax credit that i got, howevere she missed out my EIC and ACTC. With all of that plus the fact that I had to return the refund back and pay self-employed tax- obviousely it should be filed correctly, I end up still getting money back in almost the same amount as I supposenly owed to IRS. I had a huge EIC credit and full amount for ACTC that covered all the taxes I owed after correction. What I found out: SHE is not looking out for you, she will not bother herself with doing extra work to apply for credits you are eligible and plus her always advice:"Just pay it!". If I just listened to her, I would loose a lot of money unnecessary. My husband and his partner in business also suffered from her filing tax returns. In fact they had to ammend as many years back as they could to recover the money they paid unnecessary. They also have been audited. Everything resolved well thanks to the knowlegebl accountant they used after to correct all the mess Rosenthat did. By the way she charges as CPA, but I think I can do better taxes then her now. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.
